All comic book creative professionals are welcome to invite. if you write, draw, edit, color, ink, or are otherwise involved in the design of comic books and graphic novels, you are invited and encouraged to vote!

Harvey Nomination Ballots Coming Soon!

Hi everybody! We have received a few inquiries here at the Harvey Awards, and we appreciate the questions and your interest. Look for more news soon as we answer questions and provide ballots for the 2012 awards!
In the meantime, here are some answers to some frequent questions we have received about the awards!

How does a piece of work get nominated?

Voters must nominate the work using the Harvey Awards nomination ballot, which will be available soon! The top 5 nominated pieces of work (and ties) will be nominated in each category.

Do I need to send samples or copies of the work?

No. There is no submission process.

Who can vote?

Any comic creator - those who write, draw, ink, letter. color, desgn, edit, or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. Voters must include a list of credits on the ballot they submit. We encourage all professional creators to vote!

How do I promote a potential nominee?

Works are recognized when creators know about them. Creators and their advocates use Facebook, Twitter, blogs, message boards, and any other viral way that you can promote your or others' work!

When are the Harvey Awards?

The Harvey Awards will be announced and distributed on the night of September 8th, 2012 as a part of the 2012 Baltimore Comic-Con

2011 Harvey Awards Nominees Announced!

BALTIMORE, MD (July 4, 2011) -- The 2011 Harvey Awards Nominees have been announced with the release of the final ballot, presented by the Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con. Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry's most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. They will be presented August 20, 2011 in Baltimore, MD, in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con.

Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators - those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. They are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Thank you to all that have already participated by submitting a nomination ballot.

Final ballots are due to the Harvey Awards by Saturday, August 6, 2011. Full details for submission of completed ballots can be found on the final ballot. Voting is open to anyone professionally involved in a creative capacity within the comics field. Final ballots are available for download at www.harveyawards.org. Those without Internet access may request that paper ballots be sent to them via mail or fax by calling the Baltimore Comic-Con (410-526-7410) or e-mailing baltimorecomicccon@yahoo.com.

This will be the sixth year for the Harvey Awards in Baltimore, MD. Our Master of Ceremonies this year for the second year in a row will be Scott Kurtz (www.pvponline.com). Look for more details soon on how you can attend the Harvey Awards dinner.

This year's Baltimore Comic-Con will be held August 20-21, 2011. The ceremony and banquet for the 2011 Harvey Awards will be held Saturday night, August 20.

Nomination ballots for the 2011 Harvey Awards, honoring works published in 2010, are due Monday, March 28th. Ballots will be accepted by email until midnight, March 28th. For those who wish to mail the ballot, it must be postmarked by March 28th!

Ballots can be downloaded from HarveyAwards.org. Completed forms can be e-mailed to harveyballots@hotmail.com.

In addition to voting, creators are invited to blog, tweet, and use other social networking options to promote their work and the Harvey Awards. Professionals and fans can join us on facebook (facebook.com/harveyawards), twitter (@harveyawards), our blog (harveyawards.blogspot.com) and our website at www.harveyawards.org.

Nominees for this year, as well as any prior year, can use the Harvey Awards Logo bullet on their websites and published works to show that they have been honored. Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators - those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. The Harvey Awards are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

Who was Harvey Kurtzman?

Harvey Kurtzman (1924-1993) was a cartoonist, writer, editor and comics genius. He is probably best remembered for MAD, which he founded in 1952. He created 28 revolutionary issues with such talent as Will Elder, Jack Davis, and Wally Wood but left after a bitter falling out in 1956 with E.C. publisher Bill Gaines (for whom he also created Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat).

Kurtzman then created the short-lived satire magazine Trump for Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner in 1957. He followed with the comic-sizeHumbug in 1958, then Help! magazine. During his Help! tenure he discovered such diverse talent as Terry Gilliam, Gloria Steinem, Gilbert Shelton, and R. Crumb. In 1962 he and collaborator Will Elder began producing the long-running and elaborate "Little Annie Fanny" comic for Playboy. In the ‘70s he became known as the "father-in-law of underground comix" for inspiring a new generation of media-bending cartoonists.

What are the Harvey Awards?

The Harvey Awards are one of the comic book industry's oldest and most respected awards. The Harveys recognize outstanding achievements in over 20 categories, ranging from Best Artist to the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame. They are the only industry awards both nominated by and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

Beginning in 1988 at the Chicago Comic-Con, the Harveys enjoyed runs at the Dallas Fantasy Fair, Oakland's Wondercon, the Pittsburgh Comicon, and the Museum of Comics and Cartoon Art. In 2005, the Harveys have joined the Baltimore Comic-Con, held each year at the Baltimore Convention Center. The Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con look forward to a long and fruitful relationship together.

The Harvey Awards are presented annually to those creators and publications that receive the most votes from their peers in the comics industry. At the beginning of each year, nominating ballots are sent to comics professionals and publishers. Qualifying professionals are able to nominate up to five entries in each category. The top five nominees, plus ties, in each category are placed on the final ballot, which is mailed in the Spring. Final ballots are returned and the votes are tabulated. Winners are announced each year at the Harvey Awards banquet, now held as part of the Baltimore Comic-Con.

The Harvey Awards Executive Committee, or subgroups of the Executive Committee, oversees the publication and mailing of the nominating ballots, tabulation of the nominees, publication and mailing of the final ballot, tabulation of the final votes and organization and presentation of the awards. The Executive Committee does not nominate candidates for the Harvey Awards, nor engage in selection of the candidates or winners. This is done solely through votes cast by the comics professionals who choose to participate in the process.

Ballots are made available to all qualifying comics professionals, either directly from the Harvey Awards Executive Committee, the website at harveyawards.org, or from publishers who receive bundles of ballots and disseminate them to professionals in their employ.

The Harvey Awards Executive Committee and its subgroups work strictly on a volunteer basis. The Harveys employ no paid staff and are completely funded from the generous donations of its sponsors.
